What it is

A single mask applied in clinic and worn for eight to ten hours at home, then a strict home protocol for six months. It suppresses the enzyme that produces pigment rather than burning existing pigment off, which is why it is what we reach for in melasma where lasers often make things worse.

How it feels

Nothing during application. A strong tingling heat builds over the hours after the mask goes on, peaks around hours four to six, then eases. Most people describe the first evening as the hard part.

What it treats

Melasma, hormonal pigmentation, stubborn post-inflammatory marks.

Where it leaves you

Flaking has finished. Pigment keeps lightening across the following eight to twelve weeks on the home protocol.

Who this is not for

We would rather you read this now than hear it after paying.

This list is not exhaustive and it is not a substitute for the consultation — it is what most commonly means no, or means wait.

Everything we turn away
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding — hormonal melasma is not treated during either
  • Known sensitivity to hydroquinone, kojic acid or retinoids
  • Active dermatitis or broken skin on the face
  • A sun holiday planned within the next eight weeks
  • Anyone unwilling to commit to the six-month home protocol — the mask alone does not hold

If there is not enough time before your date

Not this time. Cosmelan peels heavily through the first week, and the pigment result takes months regardless of when you start. A hydrating facial for the event, and we begin Cosmelan after it.

Whether cosmelan depigmentation is right for you is decided in the room.

Bring your date if you have one. A consultation is £45, comes off your first treatment, and about one in six ends with us recommending nothing at all.
